Two Days of Generosity: BHSU Giving Days 2026 Surpasses Expectations
This year, Black Hills State University took its annual BHSU Giving Day to the next level by expanding the event into a two-day celebration of generosity, held February 26–27. The 48-hour fundraising effort brought together alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the university to support programs and opportunities that benefit current and future Yellow Jackets.
Giving Days—also known as Jackets Give Back—was first launched in 2020 and is held in conjunction with Founder’s Day, which commemorates the founding of the university on February 27, 1883. Since its creation, the event has become a meaningful tradition that highlights the power of community support and the shared commitment to helping students succeed.
A Tradition That Continues to Grow
Each year, donors are able to support the areas of campus that matter most to them. Gifts during Giving Days can be directed to student scholarships, academic programs, athletics, student life initiatives, campus improvements, and many other opportunities that enhance the student experience.
In 2025, the university raised more than $190,000 through 625 individual gifts, demonstrating the strong commitment of the BHSU community. Building on that momentum, the goal for 2026 was set at $200,000 with hopes of reaching record participation.
A Record-Breaking Year
Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Yellow Jacket community, the goal was not only met—it was surpassed.
During the two-day event in 2026, supporters made 839 total gifts from 720 donors, raising an impressive $238,968 in support of the university. The results represent one of the most successful Giving Days in the event’s history and demonstrate how impactful a united community can be when rallying around a shared cause.
Supporting the Students Who Call BHSU Home
While Giving Days supports many areas across campus, the largest portion of funds raised continues to go toward student scholarships, helping make a Black Hills State University education more accessible for students.
“The real winners of Giving Day are BHSU students,” said Steve Meeker, vice president for University Advancement. “The majority of what is raised supports student scholarships.”
Scholarship support not only helps reduce financial barriers for students but also allows them to focus more fully on their education, campus involvement, and future careers.
Looking Ahead
Expanding Giving Day into a two-day event allowed even more members of the BHSU community to participate, share the message, and make a difference. As the event continues to grow, so does the impact it has on students and programs across campus.
With another successful Giving Days in the books, the generosity of the Yellow Jacket community once again proves that when Jackets come together, incredible things happen. Every gift—no matter the size—helps create opportunities, strengthen programs, and support the next generation of BHSU students.
